Passport is an indispensable personal legal document for those who need to go abroad. However, until now, many people still do not know clearly what a passport is as well as the documents and procedures for making a passport. The detailed article below will certainly help you understand the basic information about Vietnamese passports along with some important notes based on the latest regulations of the current Law.

1. What is a passport?
Is a document owned by the State, issued by a competent authority of Vietnam for Vietnamese citizens to use for exit, entry, and to prove nationality and identity (Clause 3, Article 2). Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens 2019)

The passport contains all the basic information, including:
– Portrait;
– Last name, middle name and first name;
– Date of birth;
– Gender;
- Nationality;
– Symbols and numbers of immigration documents;
– Date, month, year of issue, issuing authority;
– Expiry date;
– Personal identification number or identity card number;
– Position and title for diplomatic passports and official passports must comply with foreign affairs requirements.
*Passport languages include both Vietnamese and English.
2. Current new passport model

From July 1, 2022, the Ministry of Public Security will begin issuing new ordinary passports.
Vietnamese citizens in the country and Vietnamese citizens abroad will begin to be issued new-model ordinary passports without electronic chips from July 1, 2022.
Accordingly, the new ordinary passport model is implemented according to Circular No. 73/2021/TT-BCA June 29, 2021 regulations on passports, travel documents and related forms.
Compared to the old model, the new ordinary passport model has many improvements. The new passport model is elaborately designed, on each page are typical images of landscapes, symbols of national sovereignty, famous cultural heritages of the country such as: Ha Long Bay, Hue Imperial City, Hung Temple, Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, Nha Rong Wharf, Lung Cu Flagpole, To Vo Gate - Ly Son Island..., contributing to affirming and promoting images of Vietnam to the world, showing the traditions, history, geography, and culture of Vietnam. Moreover, the new ordinary passport model ensures security techniques and is difficult to counterfeit.
Citizens who were issued old passports before July 1, 2022 will continue to use them until the expiry date stated in the passport. Old passports issued after July 1, 2022 will no longer be valid.
The Ministry of Public Security has transferred new models of diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports without electronic chips to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to notify Vietnamese representative agencies abroad, competent foreign agencies, and relevant international agencies and organizations.
For diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports with electronic chips, the Ministry of Public Security plans to issue them to citizens in the third quarter of 2022.
3. Classification of passports by issuer and validity period
According to Circular 73/2021/TT-BCAVietnam is currently issuing 3 types of passports including:
